Organic carbon:
SOC = TOP_OM_Mean / 1.724
Water-content term:
p100kPa = 1.04231 + EXP(-0.486474 - 0.464448186 × SOC)
Compaction Susceptibility Index:
CSI = -0.09266 + 0.01576 × (Silt + Clay)
- 0.00012 × (Silt + Clay)2
+ p100kPa
CSI formula interpretation:
The CSI equation combines soil texture and estimated water content to produce a comparative compaction-susceptibility value. Silt + Clay is the combined percentage of silt and clay in the topsoil. The positive linear term increases CSI as the combined fine-particle content increases, while the negative squared term provides a nonlinear adjustment at higher silt-plus-clay values. p100kPa is the estimated soil water content at 100 kilopascals, calculated from topsoil organic carbon using the water-content equation above. Higher CSI values indicate greater relative susceptibility within the dataset; CSI is not expressed as a probability or percentage.
Data inputs: Silt and clay are represented by TOP_SILT_Mean and TOP_CLAY_Mean. Organic matter is represented by TOP_OM_Mean and is converted to soil organic carbon in the SOC step.
Reference and limitation: USDA NRCS provides the STATSGO2 soil-property source data and official U.S. compaction-susceptibility guidance in its
Soil Susceptibility to Compaction
resource, but does not publish this numeric CSI equation as a native STATSGO2 attribute or an official national USDA rating. Accordingly, the CSI calculated here is a derived comparative index applied to USDA NRCS soil data.
County-weighted CSI:
CSI_Weighted = CSI_x_Area_Numerator / Valid_CSI_Area
CSI relative score:
CSI_Relative_Score =
((CSI_Weighted - SC minimum CSI) /
(SC maximum CSI - SC minimum CSI)) × 100
Soil properties are summarized by county using area as the weighting attribute.
Missing values are omitted from the denominator for the affected property.
Blank or unavailable values should not be interpreted as zero.
CSI_Relative_Score is a comparative index. It is not a probability, regulatory threshold, or official USDA-NRCS soil interpretation.
The dataset is derived from USDA NRCS STATSGO2 data summarized by South Carolina county.
CSI_Weighted
Area-weighted Compaction Susceptibility Index for each county, calculated from weighted topsoil silt, clay, and organic matter values using a published soil-compaction susceptibility equation.
Units: CSI index

Method reference:
The numeric CSI equation used in this workbook is a derived analytical method and is not a native USDA-NRCS STATSGO2 attribute. USDA NRCS provides official U.S. soil compaction-susceptibility guidance through its
Soil Susceptibility to Compaction
resource, which uses categorical ratings rather than this workbook's numeric CSI equation.
U.S. interpretation note:
The CSI values in this workbook are comparative, derived estimates applied to USDA STATSGO2 inputs. They should not be interpreted as an official USDA-NRCS numeric rating, regulatory threshold, or U.S.-validated national CSI. For official U.S. compaction interpretation, consult the USDA NRCS
Soil Susceptibility to Compaction
resource.
Note:
CSI_Weighted is not an official USDA-NRCS soil interpretation, regulatory rating, or native STATSGO2 attribute.

Regions colors each mapped area according to its value or category. Use it for exact regional comparisons, popups, labels, and reporting.
Surface estimates a continuous pattern from values associated with the mapped regions. Use it to explore broad spatial trends rather than to infer exact values between regions.
